Exhibit on the indigenous Indian Tribe of the Los Angeles Basin, the Kizh (aka Gabrieleno)
The San Gabriel Mountains Regional Conservancy 501c3, which voluntarily runs the SFDRA's Natures Center, will have an opening event for the new compelling exhibit on November 7, 2022, at noon. The exhibit is the first to comprehensively present the tribe and it also showcases a detailed large map of the entire original Kizh Tribal Territory which covered parts of what is now five counties, of which Los Angeles County is the foremost.
The exhibit has the following parts, each presented with compelling photographs, graphics and artifacts:
- Presentation of the Kizh Tribe and Chief Ernest Salas and how the tribe has lived in the Los Angeles area for thousands of years.
- Presentation of the Tribe's great 18th Century woman hero "Toypurina, the Joan of Arc of California."
- Presentation of the recently discovered "Stonehenge of Los Angeles," the Big Rock Site located in the San Gabriel Mountains.
- Presentation of how the Kizh sailed out to their islands on unique boats. The Kizh voyaged to their State of California recognized "Sacred Sea of Kizh" with its four islands of which Catalina is the foremost.
